Skin Deep Magazine Review

101 Celtic Crosses & 101 Celtic Knotwork Designs

Skin Deep's old friend Courtney Davis has been busy again! Courtney is one of the best known practitioners of Celtic Design in the world and has published many books depicting the ever-popular Celtic knotwork and variations. How two new books are very simple, easy to use volumes in a small, chunky format that sit side by side as a pair. Each double page spread in the books has a black and white line drawing on the left and a full color version, painted meticulously by Courtney, on the right. Perfect for use as tattoo designs!
Both books are packed with versions of authentic, centuries old images as well as new interpretations of ancient theme. From the deceptively simple to the immensely complex. Courtney's artwork offers something for all tastes.
Each volume ha a short introduction about the origins and meaning of Celtic work in the books s well as notes on each page about the specific history and sourcing of the imagery displayed.
These are delightful books, well thought out and well produced. They would make excellent source material for those seeking a Celtic inspired tattoo. After a few years lull in the popularity of Celtic tatoos, the style seems to be right back in the public consciousness and I am seing more and more of it on the tattoo scene. If you decide to get Celtik ink, my tip would be find a tattooist who is really well versed in the style. Celtic work is fantastically saisfying to look out when done correctly but it is a tricky style to get right and looks quite disastrous when not accurately done.
