After a series of experiences in 1998 Courtney began to experience a new guide to help him in his work. Though influential in the artwork in Celtic Beasts, the entity didn't reveal his name to Courtney until 2007.

At this time Courtney's marriage of 15 years had ended. A series of powerful dreams and encounters began, and with completion of the 101 series of Celtic books, a new freedom of expression took hold and with the influence of Grey Wolf he was guided to create four paintings from his visions. The new style of art was well received and a series of new pieces were commissioned for greetings cards.It was only then that Grey Wolf revealed his name, and in recognition of his importance in the work Courtney began to sign the new paintings under the name of Grey Wolf.
